According to Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., one of the doctors featured in this film, “Heart disease is an absolutely toothless paper tiger that need never ever exist.” Dr. John McDougall states, “People who are raised in Japan, the Philippines, Korea and China…never had heart disease, prostate cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple-sclerosis…”
So, if this is true – why are Americans being fed drugs instead of such vital information that can prevent, even cure – and what can be done to change the mindset and MENUS of millions of suffering Americans?
When it seemed that I would too soon let go of this world, I was introduced to a diet and lifestyle that miraculously gave me back my health. Ever since that dramatic turnaround in my own life, I have been committed to making healthier choices and living a healthier life-style, as well as making the information and knowledge that saved my life readily available to others. What good would my gift of life be, if I did not share the gift with others?
Perhaps we should be asking the medical community a very similar question. What good is your gift of healing, when you offer only the “salves and bandages” while you continue to withhold the vital cure – the life-giving information that you possess concerning diet and nutrition?
I find it interesting that The Classical Version of the Hippocratic Oath contains the following lines:
“I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice. I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody who asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect….”
So often today, pharmaceutical drugs are pushed as the acceptable remedies for whatever ails us. Unfortunately, patients have become willing participants in regimens known to cause harm over a period of time and most likely completely unnecessary were they to be offered the alternative of a macrobiotic - or plant-based – diet, proven to play a key role in the overall health and wellness of human beings.
Though it would be nice to be able to trust that someone else would show the same level of interest for our care and well-being as we have for ourselves, the well-known reality is that it is up to each of us to individually take charge of our own health. We cannot expect anyone else to make it their priority to make the right choices for us, learn the necessary information, do the hard work, or follow through for us. Your health is YOUR health.
However, I encourage you to remember that it only takes small steps to add up to better health over time…and the best medicine is preventative action. Do what you can do. Pat yourself on the back for making healthier purchases of locally grown greens, or serving a healthy side of brown rice with toasted pumpkin seeds instead of cheesy pasta. Learn what you must and then put it into action – doing it with the attitude of saving your life and the lives of those you love! I am living proof that life and death is in the foods we consume!
Choose forks over knives when eating to begin your life-style change of delicious and nutritious ways for looking good, feeling well, acting responsibly and thinking more clearly. Pick up your fork - get my help - eliminate reasons to go back to the knife – and most of all, avoid going under it!

Meg, I've missed reading your blog. I happened to see your smiling face on another person's Facebook page and linked over. I've been wanting to see this movie "Forks over Knives". I know what the message is but maybe need to see it for myself.
I've had two plus years of stress and life changes including two moves. I'm now working in a private school teaching three year old children. But I love it! We will be starting classes in two weeks after having the summer off. I spent it moving into a very small condo.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I know you've been through a major health issue and totally changed your diet. I want to start adding much more fruits and vegetables into my diet. My husband refuses but maybe I can set a good example. And in the process feel more energetic too. :)

Like you argued, I believe that all these diseases present and spreading in our world in recent decades are all due to the food we are eating. The case of the horse meat scandal in the EU clearly shows that processed food that we regularly consume may not necessarily contain the ingredients printed on the label, but other food and cheaper by-products which do not provide any benefit to our lives, but rather kill us slowly.
